There are several different types of alimony, but the basic consideration in any type is whether one party needs alimony and whether the other party has the ability to pay alimony. Different types are: bridge-the-gap, durational, permanent, rehabilitative, and lump sum. They all have additional requirements. Whether one party will be required to pay some portion of the other party’s attorney fees is also governed by the fundamental consideration of need and ability to pay.
